Yaḥyā ibn Ādam narrated to us, Ibn al-Mubārak narrated to us, from Yūnus, from al-Zuhrī, from ʿAbdullāh ibn al-Ḥārith ibn Nawfal, from ʿAbd al-Muṭṭalib ibn Rabīʿah ibn al-Ḥārith, that he and al-Faḍl came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ to have him appoint them over the collection of charity so they could benefit from it. the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "This charity is only the filth of people, and it is not lawful for Muḥammad nor for the family of Muḥammad." Then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to Maḥmiyah al-Zubaydī: "Marry al-Faḍl" — and he said to Nawfal ibn al-Ḥārith ibn ʿAbd al-Muṭṭalib: "Marry ʿAbd al-Muṭṭalib ibn Rabīʿah." And he said to Maḥmiyah ibn Jazʾ al-Zubaydī — and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to appoint him over the fifths — and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ ordered him to pay their dowries from the fifth — an amount that ʿAbdullāh ibn al-Ḥārith did not specify. At the beginning of this hadith: ʿAlī met them and said: 'the Messenger of Allah ﷺ will not appoint you.' They said: 'This is your jealousy.' He said: 'I am Abū al-Ḥasan of the people. I shall not leave until I see what he responds to you.' When they spoke to him, he was silent, and Zaynab began gesturing with her garment that he was attending to their need.
