Hadith #426

English Translation

Yaʿqūb and Saʿd narrated to us, they said: Our father narrated to us, from Ṣāliḥ, from al-Zuhrī, from ʿAbdullāh ibn ʿAbdillāh ibn al-Ḥārith ibn Nawfal ibn al-Ḥārith ibn ʿAbd al-Muṭṭalib, who informed him that ʿAbd al-Muṭṭalib ibn Rabīʿah ibn al-Ḥārith ibn ʿAbd al-Muṭṭalib informed him that Rabīʿah ibn al-Ḥārith and al-ʿAbbās ibn ʿAbd al-Muṭṭalib gathered and said: "By Allah, if we sent these two young men" — meaning me and al-Faḍl ibn ʿAbbās — "to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and he appointed them over these charities, they could perform what people perform and benefit as people benefit." While they were discussing this, ʿAlī ibn Abī Ṭālib came and said: "What do you intend?" They informed him of their plan. He said: "Do not do it, for by Allah he will not do it." One of them said: "Why do you do this? This is nothing but jealousy on your part. You have accompanied the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and attained his kinship by marriage, yet we did not begrudge you that." He said: "I am Abū Ḥasan — send them." Then he lay down. When the Ẓuhr prayer was done, we raced ahead to the chamber and stood by it until he passed by us. He took us by our hands and said: "Bring out what you have been harboring." He entered and we entered with him, and he was at that time in the house of Zaynab bint Jaḥsh. We spoke to him and said: "O Messenger of Allah, we have come to you so that you may appoint us over these charities, that we may benefit as people benefit and deliver to you as people deliver." the Messenger of Allah ﷺ was silent and raised his head toward the ceiling of the house, until we were about to speak again. Zaynab gestured to us from behind her veil as if forbidding us from speaking to him. Then he turned and said: "Indeed, charity is not befitting for Muḥammad nor for the family of Muḥammad. It is only the filth of people. Call Maḥmiyah ibn Jazʾ for me" — and he was over the tithe — "and Abū Sufyān ibn al-Ḥārith." They came, and he said to Maḥmiyah: "Pay their dowries from the fifth." Yaʿqūb narrated to us, our father narrated to us, from Muḥammad ibn Isḥāq, who said: Al-Zuhrī narrated to us, from Muḥammad ibn ʿAbdillāh ibn al-Ḥārith ibn Nawfal, from ʿAbd al-Muṭṭalib ibn Rabīʿah ibn al-Ḥārith, who said: Al-ʿAbbās ibn ʿAbd al-Muṭṭalib and Ibn Rabīʿah ibn al-Ḥārith gathered in the mosque — and he mentioned the hadith.
