English Translation

ʿUbaydah ibn Ḥumayd narrated to us, ʿUmar ibn ʿAbdillāh ibn Yaʿlā ibn Murrah narrated to me, from his father, from his grandfather Yaʿlā ibn Murrah, who said: "I bathed and applied khalūq perfume, and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to wipe our faces. When he drew near me, he began turning his hand away from the khalūq. When he finished, he said: 'O Yaʿlā, what made you use khalūq? Are you married?' I said: 'No.' He said to me: 'Go and wash it off.'" He said: "I passed by a well and kept plunging into it, then rubbing myself with dirt until it was gone. Then I came to him, and when the Prophet ﷺ saw me, he said: 'He has returned to the goodness of his religion — the Most High has accepted his repentance, and the sky has poured forth.'"
