Hadith #53

English Translation

Rawḥ narrated to us saying: al-Awzāʿī narrated to us, from Ḥassān ibn ʿAṭiyyah, who said: Shaddād ibn Aws was on a journey and stopped at a place. He said to his servant: "Bring us the blade so we can occupy ourselves with it." I disapproved of that, so he said: "I have not spoken a word since I became Muslim except that I bridle it and rein it in — except for this statement of mine. So do not hold it against me. Rather, remember from me what I will tell you: I heard the Messenger of Allāh ﷺ say: 'When people hoard gold and silver, hoard these words: O Allāh, I ask You for steadfastness in [my] affairs and resolve upon guidance. I ask You for gratitude for Your blessings and excellence in worshipping You. I ask You for a sound heart and a truthful tongue. I ask You for the best of what You know, and I seek refuge in You from the worst of what You know, and I seek Your forgiveness for what You know. Indeed, You are the Knower of the unseen.'"
