حَدَّثَنَا حَسَنٌ قَالَ ثَنَا ابْنُ لَهِيعَةَ قَالَ ثَنَا يَزِيدُ بْنُ أَبِي حَبِيبٍ قَالَ أَخْبَرَنِي سُوَيْدُ بْنُ قَيْسٍ عَنْ قَيْسِ بْنِ سُمَيٍّ أَنَّ عَمْرَو بْنَ الْعَاصِ قَالَ قُلْتُ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ أُبَايِعُكَ عَلَى أَنْ تَغْفِرَ لِي مَا تَقَد
َّمَ مِنْ ذَنْبِي فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ إِنَّ الْإِسْلَامَ يَجُبُّ مَا كَانَ قَبْلَهُ وَإِنَّ الْهِجْرَةَ تَجُبُّ مَا كَانَ قَبْلَهَا قَالَ عَمْرٌو فَوَاللَّهِ إِنْ كُنْتُ لَأَشَدَّ النَّاسِ حَيَاءً مِنْ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ فَمَا مَلَأْتُ عَيْنِي مِنْ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ وَلَا رَاجَعْتُهُ بِمَا أُرِيدُ حَتَّى لَحِقَ بِاللَّهِ عَزَّ وَجَلَّ حَيَاءً مِنْهُ

English Translation
ʿAmr ibn al-ʿĀṣ narrated: I said, 'O Messenger of Allah, I pledge allegiance to you on condition that you forgive my past sins.' the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: 'Islam erases what came before it, and hijrah erases what came before it.' ʿAmr said: 'By Allah, I was the most bashful of people before the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. I could not fill my eyes looking at him, nor could I challenge him on anything I wanted, until he departed to Allah عز وجل — out of shyness before him.'
