English Translation

Yūnus ibn Muḥammad narrated to us, Ḥammād ibn Zayd narrated to us, Mujālid narrated to us, from Qays ibn Abī Ḥāzim, from al-Mustawrid ibn Shaddād, who said: The Messenger of Allāh ﷺ said: 'By the One in Whose hand is my soul, the worldly life compared to the Hereafter is nothing but like a man who dipped his finger into the sea then withdrew it.' He said: And I was indeed in the riding party with the Messenger of Allāh ﷺ when he passed by a dead kid goat discarded on a refuse heap. He said: 'Do you think this was worthless to its owners?' They said: 'Because of its worthlessness they discarded it here.' He said: 'By the One in Whose hand is my soul, the worldly life is more worthless to Allāh عز وجل than this is to its owners.'
