English Translation

Khalaf ibn al-Walīd narrated to us, ʿAbbād ibn ʿAbbād — meaning al-Muhallabī — narrated to us, al-Mujālid ibn Saʿīd narrated to us, from Qays ibn Abī Ḥāzim, from al-Mustawrid ibn Shaddād, who said: I heard the Messenger of Allāh ﷺ saying: 'By Allāh, the worldly life compared to the Hereafter is nothing but like a man who dipped his finger into the sea then it came back to him — so what did it take from it?' He said: And al-Mustawrid said: 'I bear witness that I was with the riding party who were with the Messenger of Allāh ﷺ when he passed by the camp of a people who had departed from it, and there was a dead kid goat thrown aside. He said: "Do you think this was worthless to its owners when they discarded it?" They said: "Because of its worthlessness to them they discarded it." He said: "By Allāh, the worldly life is more worthless to Allāh عز وجل than this is to its owners."'
