English Translation

Muḥammad ibn Jaʿfar narrated to us, Shuʿbah narrated to us, from ʿAmr ibn Murrah, from Sālim ibn Abī al-Jaʿd, from Shuraḥbīl ibn al-Simṭ, who said: A man said to Kaʿb ibn Murrah — or Murrah ibn Kaʿb — 'Narrate to us a hadith you heard from the Messenger of Allāh ﷺ, for Allāh's sake, and be careful.' He said: 'I heard the Messenger of Allāh ﷺ saying: "Whichever man frees a Muslim man, it will be his ransom from the Fire — each bone of the freed man's bones for a bone of his own. And whichever Muslim man frees two Muslim women, they will be his ransom from the Fire — every two bones of theirs for a bone of his. And whichever Muslim woman frees a Muslim woman, she will be her ransom from the Fire — each bone of the freed woman for a bone of her own."' And the Messenger of Allāh ﷺ supplicated against Muḍar. He said: So I came to him and said: 'O Messenger of Allāh, Allāh عز وجل has granted you victory and given you and answered you, and your people are perishing, so supplicate to Allāh for them.' He turned away from me. I said again: 'O Messenger of Allāh, Allāh عز وجل has granted you victory and given you and answered you, and your people are perishing, so supplicate to Allāh for them.' He said: 'O Allāh, give us rain — beneficial, productive, abundant, plentiful, widespread, swift and not delayed, helpful and not harmful.' It was only about a Friday or so before they received rain. Shuʿbah said: In the supplication there is a word I heard from Ḥabīb ibn Abī Thābit, from Sālim, regarding the rain prayer. And in the hadith of Ḥabīb — or ʿAmr — from Sālim, he said: 'I have come to you from a people whose stallions are too weak to mate and whose shepherds have no provisions.'
