Hadith #375

English Translation

Muḥammad ibn Jaʿfar narrated to us, Shuʿbah narrated to us, from ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn al-Aṣbahānī, from ʿAbdullāh ibn Maʿqil, who said: I sat with Kaʿb ibn ʿUjrah in the mosque and asked him about this verse: {Then a ransom of fasting or charity or sacrifice}. Kaʿb said: 'It was revealed concerning me. I had an ailment on my head, so I was carried to the Messenger of Allāh ﷺ with the lice falling on my face. He said: "I did not think the hardship had reached you to what I see. Can you find a sheep?" I said: "No." So this verse was revealed: {Then a ransom of fasting or charity or sacrifice}. He said: "Fasting three days, or feeding six needy persons half a ṣāʿ of food each." He said: It was revealed concerning me specifically, but it is for you generally.' ʿAffān narrated to us, Shuʿbah narrated to us, ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn al-Aṣbahānī narrated to us, who said: I heard ʿAbdullāh ibn Maʿqil saying: I sat with Kaʿb in this mosque — and he mentioned its meaning. Bahz narrated to us, Shuʿbah narrated to us, ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn al-Aṣbahānī narrated to us, who said: I heard ʿAbdullāh ibn Maʿqil, who said: I sat with Kaʿb ibn ʿUjrah in this mosque and asked him about this verse — and he mentioned the hadith, and he said: 'Feed six needy persons, each needy person half a ṣāʿ of food.'
