English Translation

Hishām ibn ʿAbd al-Malik Abū al-Walīd narrated to us, Abū ʿAwānah narrated to us, from ʿAbd al-Malik, from Warrād the scribe of al-Mughīrah, from al-Mughīrah ibn Shuʿbah رضي الله عنه: Saʿd ibn ʿUbādah said: 'If I saw a man with my wife, I would strike him with the sword — not with the flat side.' This reached the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and he said: 'Are you amazed at the jealousy of Saʿd? By Allah, I am more jealous than him, and Allah is more jealous than me. Because of Allah's jealousy, He has forbidden indecencies — what is apparent of them and what is hidden. There is no person more jealous than Allah, and there is no person to whom excuse is more beloved than Allah. For that reason, Allah sent the Messengers as bearers of glad tidings and warners. And there is no person to whom praise is more beloved than Allah. For that reason, Allah promised Paradise.' — ʿUbaydullāh al-Qawārīrī narrated to us, Abū ʿAwānah narrated to us with the same chain — an identical report. Abū ʿAbd al-Raḥmān said: al-Qawārīrī said: 'There is no ḥadīth harder upon the Jahmiyyah than this one — his statement: "There is no person to whom praise is more beloved than Allah عز وجل."'
