Saʿd and Yaʿqūb said: our father narrated to us, from Ṣāliḥ, from Ibn Shihāb, ʿAbbād ibn Ziyād narrated to me — Saʿd said: Abī Sufyān — from ʿUrwah ibn al-Mughīrah, from his father al-Mughīrah ibn Shuʿbah رضي الله عنه who said: I stayed behind with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ during the expedition of Tabūk. the Messenger of Allah ﷺ went out to relieve himself, then returned to me, and I had the water vessel. I poured water over the hands of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, then he blew his nose — Yaʿqūb said: then he rinsed his mouth, then washed his face three times. Then he wanted to wash his hands before pulling them out of the sleeves of his cloak, but the sleeves were too tight. So he pulled his hand out of the cloak, washed his right hand three times and his left hand three times, and wiped over his leather socks without removing them. Then he headed toward the people and found they had put forward ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn ʿAwf to lead them. the Messenger of Allah ﷺ caught one of the two rakʿahs and prayed with the people the last rakʿah following ʿAbd al-Raḥmān's prayer. When ʿAbd al-Raḥmān gave the salām, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ stood to complete his prayer. This alarmed the Muslims, and they made much tasbīḥ. When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ finished, he turned to them and said: 'You have done well and done right' — commending them for having prayed the prayer at its time.
