ʿAbd al-Razzāq and Muḥammad ibn Bakr narrated to us, they said: Ibn Jurayj informed us, he said: Ibn Shihāb narrated to me, from the ḥadīth of ʿAbbād ibn Ziyād: ʿUrwah ibn al-Mughīrah ibn Shuʿbah informed him that al-Mughīrah ibn Shuʿbah informed him that he participated with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ in the expedition of Tabūk. al-Mughīrah said: the Messenger of Allah ﷺ went out to relieve himself toward the open ground. I carried with him a water vessel before the Fajr prayer. When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ returned to me, I began pouring water over his hands from the vessel. He washed his hands three times, then washed his face, then went to pull the cloak off his forearms, but the sleeves of his cloak were too tight. So he put his hands into the cloak until he pulled his forearms out from underneath it. He washed his forearms up to the elbows, then wiped over his leather socks. Then he headed back. al-Mughīrah said: I headed back with him until we found the people had put forward ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn ʿAwf to lead them. He caught one of the two rakʿahs. ʿAbd al-Razzāq and Ibn Bakr said: He prayed with the people the last rakʿah. When ʿAbd al-Raḥmān gave the salām, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ stood to complete his prayer. This alarmed the Muslims, and they made much tasbīḥ. When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ finished his prayer, he turned to them and said: 'Well done' — or: 'You have done right' — commending them for having prayed the prayer at its time. — ʿAbd al-Razzāq narrated to us, from Ibn Jurayj, Ibn Shihāb narrated to me, from Ismāʿīl ibn Muḥammad ibn Saʿd, from Ḥamzah ibn al-Mughīrah — a report similar to that of ʿAbbād. al-Mughīrah said: I wanted to move ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn ʿAwf back, but the Prophet ﷺ said: 'Leave him.'
