English Translation
Abū al-Mughīrah narrated to us, Muʿān ibn Rifāʿah narrated to us, ʿAlī ibn Yazīd narrated to me, from al-Qāsim Abū ʿAbd al-Raḥmān, from Abū Umāmah al-Bāhilī, from al-Mughīrah ibn Shuʿbah رضي الله عنه who said: the Messenger of Allah ﷺ called for water, so I went to a tent and found a Bedouin woman inside. I said: 'This is the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and he wants water for wuḍūʾ. Do you have any water?' She said: 'May my father and mother be sacrificed for the Messenger of Allah ﷺ! By Allah, the sky does not shade nor does the earth carry a soul more beloved to me than his, nor more dear. But this water-skin is from a dead animal's hide, and I do not wish to defile the Messenger of Allah ﷺ with it.' I returned to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and told him. He said: 'Go back to her. If she has tanned it, then that is its purification.' So I went back to her and mentioned that. She said: 'Yes, by Allah, I have tanned it.' So I brought him water from it. He was wearing that day a Syrian cloak and had on leather socks and a head covering. He put his hands in from underneath the cloak — from the tightness of its sleeves — and performed wuḍūʾ, wiping over the head covering and the leather socks.
