لَيْسَ مِنَّا رَجُلٌ إِلَّا وَلَهُ اسْمَانِ أَوْ ثَلَاثَةٌ فَكَانَ إِذَا دُعِيَ أَحَدٌ مِنْهُمْ بِاسْمٍ مِنْ تِلْكَ الْأَسْمَاءِ قَالُوا يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ إِنَّهُ يَغْضَبُ مِنْ هَذَا قَالَ فَنَزَلَتْ { وَلَا تَنَابَزُوا بِالْأَلْقَابِ }

English Translation
Ismāʿīl narrated to us, Dāwūd ibn Abī Hind narrated to us, from al-Shaʿbī, who said: Abū Jabīrah ibn al-Ḍaḥḥāk narrated to me, he said: The verse was revealed about us, about Banū Salimah: {And do not call one another by nicknames}. He said: the Messenger of Allah ﷺ came to Madinah and there was not a man among us who did not have two or three names. Whenever one of them was called by one of those names, they would say, 'O Messenger of Allah, he gets angry at this.' So the verse was revealed: {And do not call one another by nicknames}.
