English Translation

Abū Nawfal ibn Abī ʿAqrab narrated: ʿAmr ibn al-ʿĀṣ was extremely distressed at the time of death. When his son ʿAbdullāh ibn ʿAmr saw this, he said: 'O Abū ʿAbdillāh, what is this distress? the Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to draw you near and appoint you.' ʿAmr said: 'O my son, that is true, and I will tell you about it. By Allah, I do not know whether that was out of love or whether he was winning me over. But I bear witness regarding two men that the Prophet ﷺ departed this world while he loved them: Ibn Sumayyah (ʿAmmār) and Ibn Umm ʿAbd (Ibn Masʿūd).' After he had spoken, he placed his hand where the collar rests on his chin and said: 'O Allah, You commanded us and we fell short. You forbade us and we transgressed. Nothing suffices us but Your forgiveness.' And this remained his repeated supplication until he died.
