Hadith #532

حَدَّثَنَا وَكِيعٌ عَنْ حَمَّادِ بْنِ سَلَمَةَ عَنْ ثَابِتٍ عَنْ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنِ أَبِي لَيْلَى عَنْ صُهَيْبٍ قَالَ كَانَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ يُحَرِّكُ شَفَتَيْهِ أَيَّامَ حُنَيْنٍ بِشَيْءٍ لَمْ يَكُنْ يَفْعَلُهُ قَبْلَ ذَلِكَ قَالَ فَقَالَ النَّبِيُّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ إِنَّ نَبِيًّا كَانَ فِيمَنْ كَانَ قَبْلَكُمْ أَعْجَبَتْهُ أُمَّتُهُ فَقَالَ لَنْ يَرُومَ هَؤُلَاءِ شَيْءٌ فَأَوْحَى اللَّهُ إِلَيْهِ أَنْ خَيِّرْهُ
مْ بَيْنَ إِحْدَى ثَلَاثٍ إِمَّا أَنْ أُسَلِّطَ عَلَيْهِمْ عَدُوًّا مِنْ غَيْرِهِمْ فَيَسْتَبِيحَهُمْ أَوْ الْجُوعَ أَوْ الْمَوْتَ قَالَ فَقَالُوا أَمَّا الْقَتْلُ أَوْ الْجُوعُ فَلَا طَاقَةَ لَنَا بِهِ وَلَكِنْ الْمَوْتُ قَالَ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ فَمَاتَ فِي ثَلَاثٍ سَبْعُونَ أَلْفًا قَالَ فَقَالَ فَأَنَا أَقُولُ الْآنَ اللَّهُمَّ بِكَ أُحَاوِلُ وَبِكَ أَصُولُ وَبِكَ أُقَاتِلُ

English Translation
Wakīʿ narrated to us, from Ḥammād ibn Salamah, from Thābit, from ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn Abī Laylā, from Ṣuhayb, who said: the Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to move his lips during the days of Ḥunayn with something he had not been doing before that. the Prophet ﷺ said: "Indeed, a prophet among those before you was impressed by the great numbers of his ummah and said: 'Nothing shall challenge these.' So Allah revealed to him: 'Give them a choice of three: either I unleash upon them an enemy from others who will devastate them, or hunger, or death.' They said: 'We cannot bear being killed or hunger, but death.' the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: 'Seventy thousand of them died in three days.' He said: 'So now I say: O Allah, by You I strive, by You I attack, and by You I fight.'"
