English Translation

ʿAṭiyyah al-ʿAwfī narrated: I asked Zayd ibn Arqam and said, 'A son-in-law of mine narrated a ḥadīth from you regarding ʿAlī رضي الله تعالى عنه on the day of Ghadīr Khumm, and I would like to hear it from you directly.' He said: 'You people of Iraq — you have what you have (of tribulations).' I said, 'You have nothing to fear from me.' He said: 'Yes. We were at al-Juḥfah when the Messenger of Allah ﷺ came out to us at midday, holding the arm of ʿAlī رضي الله تعالى عنه. He said: O people, do you not know that I am closer to the believers than their own selves? They said: Yes. He said: Do you not know that I am closer to every believer than his own self? They said: Yes. He said: Whoever I am his master (mawlā), then ʿAlī is his master. O Allah, befriend whoever befriends him and be hostile to whoever is hostile to him.' He said: Then ʿUmar رضي الله تعالى عنه met him and said: 'Congratulations to you, O son of Abū Ṭālib! You have become, morning and evening, the master of every believing man and woman.'
