English Translation

ʿAdī ibn Ḥātim narrated: When this verse was revealed — 'Eat and drink until the white thread becomes distinct to you from the black thread' — I took two headbands, one black and one white, and placed them under my pillow. I kept looking at them but I could not distinguish the black from the white nor the white from the black. When morning came, I went to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and told him what I had done. He said: 'Your pillow must be very wide indeed! It is only the darkness of the night and the whiteness of the day.'
