English Translation

Muḥammad ibn Jaʿfar narrated to us, Shuʿbah narrated to us, from Abū Maslamah, from Abū Naḍrah, from Abū Saʿīd al-Khudrī, who said: Abū Mūsā sought permission to enter upon ʿUmar رضي الله تعالى عنهما. He said: Once, twice, three times — then Abū Mūsā went back. ʿUmar رضي الله تعالى عنه said to him: 'You must bring proof of this or I shall do something to you' — as if he were saying: 'I shall make an example of you throughout the lands.' So Abū Mūsā went to a gathering of the Anṣār and mentioned that to them. He said: 'Did you not know that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: When one of you seeks permission three times and is not granted permission, let him go back?' They said: 'Yes, none shall stand with you as witness except the youngest of us.' So Abū Saʿīd al-Khudrī stood and went to ʿUmar and said: 'This is Abū Saʿīd.' So he let him go.
