Hadith #563

English Translation

Ismāʿīl narrated to us, Saʿīd informed us, from Qatādah, from Yūnus ibn Jubayr, from Ḥiṭṭān ibn ʿAbd Allāh al-Raqāshī, from Abū Mūsā al-Ashʿarī, who said: the Messenger of Allah ﷺ taught us our prayer and our Sunnah. He said: 'The imām is appointed only to be followed. So when he says the takbīr, say the takbīr. When he recites {not of those who earned anger, nor of those who went astray}, say Āmīn and Allah تعالى will answer you. When he bows, bow. When he raises, raise. When he says: Samiʿa Allāhu li-man ḥamidah, say: Allāhumma Rabbanā laka al-ḥamd, and Allah will hear you. When he prostrates, prostrate. When he raises, raise — for the imām prostrates before you and raises before you.' the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: 'So that compensates for that.'
