English Translation

ʿAlī ibn Isḥāq narrated to us, ʿAbd Allāh ibn al-Mubārak narrated to us, Yaḥyā ibn Ayyūb informed us, from ʿUmārah ibn Ghaziyyah, from Muḥammad ibn ʿAbd Allāh ibn ʿAmr, from his mother Fāṭimah bint Ḥusayn, from ʿĀʾishah رضي الله عنها, that she used to say: Usayd ibn Ḥuḍayr was among the most virtuous of people, and he used to say, 'If I could remain as I am in three of my states, I would be — when I recite the Quran, when I hear it being recited, and when I hear the sermon of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and when I attend a funeral.' He said, 'I have never attended a funeral without reflecting upon what will be done to the deceased and what they are heading toward.'
