Hadith #70

English Translation

Yazīd ibn Hārūn narrated to us, Muḥammad ibn ʿAmr informed us, from his father, from his grandfather ʿAlqamah, from ʿĀʾishah رضي الله عنها who said: We returned from Hajj — or ʿUmrah — and were met at Dhū al-Ḥulayfah. Some boys from the Anṣār had come to meet their families, and they met Usayd ibn Ḥuḍayr. They informed him of his wife's death, and he covered his face and began to weep. I said to him, 'May Allah forgive you. You are a Companion of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and you have the precedence and standing that you have, yet you weep over a woman?' He uncovered his head and said, 'You speak the truth. By my life, I should not weep for anyone after Saʿd ibn Muʿādh, after what the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said about him.' She said: I asked him, 'What did the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say about him?' He said, 'The Throne shook at the death of Saʿd ibn Muʿādh.' She said: And he was riding between me and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ.
