ʿAffān narrated to us, Ḥammād ibn Salamah narrated to us, al-Azraq ibn Qays informed us, from Sharīk ibn Shihāb who said: I used to wish that I would meet a man from the Companions of the Prophet ﷺ who would narrate to me about the Khawārij. So I met Abū Barzah on the day of ʿArafah among a group of his companions. I said: O Abū Barzah, narrate to us something you heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say about the Khawārij. He said: I will narrate to you what my ears heard and my eyes saw. the Messenger of Allah ﷺ was brought dīnārs and was distributing them. Beside him was a black man with closely-cropped hair, wearing two white garments, with the mark of prostration between his eyes. He approached the Messenger of Allah ﷺ from in front of him, but was not given anything. Then he approached from behind, but was not given anything. He said: By Allah, O Muḥammad, you have not been just today in the distribution! the Messenger of Allah ﷺ became extremely angry, then said: ‘By Allah, you will not find after me anyone more just to you than me’ — he said it three times. Then he said: ‘There will emerge from the direction of the East men — this one was among them — whose appearance is like this. They recite the Qurʾān but it does not pass beyond their throats. They will fly out of the religion as an arrow flies through the prey. They will not return to it.’ And he placed his hand on his chest. ‘Their sign is shaving. They will continue to emerge until the last of them comes forth. If you see them, kill them’ — he said it three times — ‘the worst of creation and creatures’ — he said it three times. Ḥammād also said: ‘They will not return to it.’
