Abd al-Samad and Yūnus both said: Hammād — meaning Ibn Salamah — narrated to us, from al-Azraq ibn Qays, that Sharīk ibn Shihāb — Yūnus said: al-Hārithī — and this is the hadith of Abd al-Samad — said: I wished that I could meet a man from the Companions of Muhammad ﷺ who would tell me about the Khawārij. So I met Abū Barzah among a group of the Companions of Muhammad ﷺ, and I said: Tell me something you heard from the Messenger of Allāh ﷺ regarding the Khawārij. He said: I shall tell you something that my ears heard and my eyes saw. The Messenger of Allāh ﷺ was brought gold coins and he distributed them. There was a man with thick, matted hair, dark-skinned or black, with the mark of prostration between his eyes, wearing two white garments. He kept coming from the Prophet ﷺ’s right side, presenting himself, but the Prophet ﷺ did not give him anything. He said: O Muhammad, you have not been just today in the distribution! the Prophet ﷺ became extremely angry, then said: By Allāh, you shall not find anyone after me more just to you than I — he said it three times. Then he said: There shall emerge from the direction of the East men — this one was among them — whose manner is like this. They recite the Qur’ān but it does not go beyond their throats. They pass through the religion as an arrow passes through its prey, then they do not return to it. Their mark is shaving their heads. They shall continue to emerge until the last of them comes out with the Dajjāl. So when you meet them, kill them — they are the worst of creation and creatures. Affān narrated to us: Hammād ibn Salamah informed us, from al-Azraq ibn Qays, from Sharīk ibn Shihāb who said: I used to wish that I would meet a man from the Companions of Muhammad ﷺ who would tell me about the Khawārij. So I met Abū Barzah on the Day of Arafah among a group of his companions — and he mentioned the hadith.
