Ṣafwān ibn ʿIsā narrated to us, ʿAzrah ibn Thābit informed us, from Yaḥyā ibn ʿUqayl, from Ibn Yaʿmar, from Abū al-Aswad al-Dīlī, who said: I visited ʿImrān ibn Ḥuṣayn one morning, and he said: ‘O Abū al-Aswad!’ Then he mentioned the hadith: A man from Juhaynah — or Muzaynah — came to the Prophet ﷺ and said: ‘O Messenger of Allah, what do you think about what people do today and strive in? Is it something decreed upon them and already passed in a predestination that preceded, or is it something they will face from what their Prophet ﷺ brought them, and the proof was established against them by it?’ He said: ‘Rather, it is something decreed upon them and already passed upon them.’ He said: ‘Then why do they strive, O Messenger of Allah?’ He said: ‘Whoever Allah عز وجل created for one of the two destinations, He facilitates him for its deeds. The confirmation of that is in the Book of Allah عز وجل: {And by the soul and He who proportioned it, then inspired it with its wickedness and its righteousness.}’
