English Translation

‘Abd al-Razzāq narrated to us, al-Thawrī narrated to us, my father narrated to me, from al-Sha‘bī, from Sam‘ān ibn Mushannaj, from Samurah ibn Jundub, who said: We were with the Prophet ﷺ at a funeral when he said: ‘Is anyone here from the clan of so-and-so?’ — saying it three times. A man stood up and the Prophet ﷺ said to him: ‘What prevented you from answering in the first two calls? Know that I only singled you out for good: your kinsman so-and-so who died is bound by his debt.’ He (the narrator) said: I was told that his family and those who grieved for him paid it off until no one remained with any claim against him. (‘Affān narrated to us, Abū ‘Awānah narrated to us, from Firās, from al-Sha‘bī, from Samurah, and mentioned the ḥadīth. Abū Sufyān al-Ma‘marī narrated to us, from Sufyān, from his father, from al-Sha‘bī, from Sam‘ān ibn Mushannaj, from Samurah ibn Jundub, and mentioned the ḥadīth. ‘Abd Allāh narrated to us, Abū Bakr ibn Abī Shaybah narrated to us, Wakī‘ narrated to us, from his father, from Sa‘īd ibn Masrūq, from al-Sha‘bī, and mentioned this ḥadīth. I relayed it to my father (Imam Aḥmad), and he said: I did not hear it from Wakī‘.)
