حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ جَعْفَرٍ حَدَّثَنَا شُعْبَةُ قَالَ سَمِعْتُ قَتَادَةَ يُحَدِّثُ عَنْ مُطَرِّفِ بْنِ الشِّخِّيرِ وَحَجَّاجٌ قَالَ حَدَّثَنِي شُعْبَةُ قَالَ حَجَّاجٌ فِي حَدِيثِه

Body (Matn)

ِ سَمِعْتُ مُطَرِّفَ بْنَ الشِّخِّيرِ يُحَدِّثُ عَنْ حَكِيمِ بْنِ قَيْسِ بْنِ عَاصِمٍ عَنْ أَبِيهِ أَنَّهُ أَوْصَى وَلَدَهُ عِنْدَ مَوْتِهِ قَالَ اتَّقُوا اللَّهَ عَزَّ وَجَلَّ وَسَوِّدُوا أَكْبَرَكُمْ فَإِنَّ الْقَوْمَ إِذَا سَوَّدُوا أَكْبَرَهُمْ خَلَفُوا أَبَاهُمْ فَذَكَرَ الْحَدِيثَ وَإِذَا مُتُّ فَلَا تَنُوحُوا عَلَيَّ فَإِنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ لَمْ يُنَحْ عَلَيْهِ

English Translation

It was narrated from Hakam ibn Qays ibn 'Asim, from his father (may Allah be pleased with him), that he advised his children on his deathbed, saying: 'Fear Allah the Exalted and honour your eldest, for when a people honour their eldest they succeed their father. And when I die, do not wail over me, for the Messenger of Allah ﷺ was not wailed over.'
