Hadith #556
Arabic Text
حَدَّثَنَا إِسْمَاعِيلُ عَنِ الْجُرَيْرِيِّ عَنْ أَبِي صَخْرٍ الْعُقَيْلِيِّ حَدَّثَنِي رَجُلٌ مِنَ الْأَعْرَابِ قَالَ جَلَبْتُ جَلُوبَةً إِلَى الْمَدِينَةِ فِي حَيَاةِ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ فَلَمَّا فَرَغْتُ مِنْ بَيْعَتِي قُلْتُ لَأَلْقَيَنَّ هَذَا الرَّجُلَ فَلَأَسْمَعَنَّ مِنْهُ قَالَ فَتَلَقَّانِي بَيْنَ أَبِي بَكْرٍ وَعُمَرَ يَمْشُونَ فَتَبِعْتُهُمْ فِي أَقْفَائِهِمْ حَتَّى أَتَوْا عَلَى رَجُلٍ مِنْ الْيَهُودِ نَاشِرًا التَّوْرَاةَ يَقْرَؤُهَا يُعَزِّي بِهَا نَفْسَهُ عَلَى ابْنٍ لَهُ فِي الْمَوْتِ كَأَحْسَنِ الْفِتْ
يَانِ وَأَجْمَلِهِ فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ أَنْشُدُكَ بِالَّذِي أَنْزَلَ التَّوْرَاةَ هَلْ تَجِدُ فِي كِتَابِكَ ذَا صِفَتِي وَمَخْرَجِي فَقَالَ بِرَأْسِهِ هَكَذَا أَيْ لَا فَقَالَ ابْنُهُ إِنِّي وَالَّذِي أَنْزَلَ التَّوْرَاةَ إِنَّا لَنَجِدُ فِي كِتَابِنَا صِفَتَكَ وَمَخْرَجَكَ وَأَشْهَدُ أَنَّ لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا اللَّهُ وَأَنَّكَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ فَقَالَ أَقِيمُوا الْيَهُودَ عَنْ أَخِيكُمْ ثُمَّ وَلِيَ كَفَنَهُ وَحَنَّطَهُ وَصَلَّى عَلَيْهِ

English Translation
It was narrated from a Bedouin man that he said: I brought merchandise to Madinah during the lifetime of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. When I finished my trade, I said to myself: I will certainly meet this man and hear from him. So he met me between Abu Bakr and Umar as they were walking. I followed behind them until they came upon a Jewish man who had the Torah spread open and was reading it to console himself over the loss of a son. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to him: I ask you by the One Who revealed the Torah, do you find in it that I am the Prophet of Allah? The Jewish man looked at his companions and they were silent. Then he said: Yes, by the One Who revealed the Torah, we find in it the description of you and your coming, but we were afraid that if we followed you, the Arabs would expel us from our land.
