حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو سَلَمَةَ يُوسُفُ بْنُ يَعْقُوبَ الْمَاجِشُونُ عَنْ صَالِحِ بْنِ إِبْرَاهِيمَ بْنِ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنِ عَوْفٍ عَنْ أَبِيهِ عَنْ جَدِّهِ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنِ عَوْفٍ أَنَّهُ قَالَ إِنِّي لَوَاقِفٌ يَوْمَ بَدْرٍ فِي الصَّفِّ نَظَرْتُ عَنْ يَمِينِي وَعَنْ شِمَالِي فَإِذَا أَنَا بَيْنَ غُلَامَيْنِ مِنْ الْأَنْصَارِ حَدِيثَةٍ أَسْنَانُهُمَا تَمَنَّيْتُ لَوْ كُنْتُ بَيْنَ أَضْلَعَ مِنْهُمَا فَغَمَزَنِي أَحَدُهُمَا فَقَالَ يَا عَمِّ هَلْ تَعْرِفُ أَبَا جَهْلٍ قَالَ قُلْتُ نَعَمْ وَمَا حَاجَتُكَ يَا ابْنَ أَخِي قَالَ بَلَغَنِي أَنَّهُ سَبَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ وَالَّذِي نَفْسِي بِيَدِهِ لَوْ رَأَيْتُهُ لَمْ يُفَارِقْ سَوَادِي سَوَادَهُ حَتَّى يَمُوتَ الْأَعْجَلُ مِنَّا قَالَ فَغَمَزَنِي الْآخَرُ فَقَالَ لِي مِثْلَهَا قَالَ فَت
َعَجَّبْتُ لِذَلِكَ قَالَ فَلَمْ أَنْشَبْ أَنْ نَظَرْتُ إِلَى أَبِي جَهْلٍ يَجُولُ فِي النَّاسِ فَقُلْتُ لَهُمَا أَلَا تَرَيَانِ هَذَا صَاحِبُكُمَا الَّذِي تَسْأَلَانِ عَنْهُ فَابْتَدَرَاهُ فَاسْتَقْبَلَهُمَا فَضَرَبَاهُ حَتَّى قَتَلَاهُ ثُمَّ انْصَرَفَا إِلَى رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ فَأَخْبَرَاهُ فَقَالَ أَيُّكُمَا قَتَلَهُ فَقَالَ كُلُّ وَاحِدٍ مِنْهُمَا أَنَا قَتَلْتُهُ قَالَ هَلْ مَسَحْتُمَا سَيْفَيْكُمَا قَالَا لَا فَنَظَرَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ فِي السَّيْفَيْنِ فَقَالَ كِلَاكُمَا قَتَلَهُ وَقَضَى بِسَلَبِهِ لِمُعَاذِ بْنِ عَمْرِو بْنِ الْجَمُوحِ وَهُمَا مُعَاذُ بْنُ عَمْرِو بْنِ الْجَمُوحِ وَمُعَاذُ ابْنُ عَفْرَاءَ

English Translation
'Abd al-Rahman ibn 'Awf (رضي الله عنه) said: 'I was standing on the Day of Badr in the row. I looked to my right and my left and found myself between two young Ansari boys. I wished I were between sturdier men. One of them nudged me and said: O uncle, do you know Abu Jahl? I said: Yes. What do you want with him, O nephew? He said: I have been told that he curses the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. By the One in Whose hand is my soul, if I see him, my shadow shall not part from his until whichever of us dies first. The other one then nudged me and said the same. I was amazed at that. Then I spotted Abu Jahl moving about among the people, and I said: Do you not see? This is the one you were asking about. They rushed at him with their swords and struck him until they killed him. Then they went to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and informed him. He said: Which of you killed him? Each of them said: I killed him. He said: Have you wiped your swords? They said: No. He looked at their swords and said: Both of you killed him — and he awarded his spoils to Mu'adh ibn 'Amr ibn al-Jamuh. The two boys were Mu'adh ibn 'Amr ibn al-Jamuh and Mu'adh ibn 'Afra'.'
