English Translation
Abu al-Mughirah narrated to us, Safwan ibn 'Amr narrated to us, Abu Hisbah Muslim ibn Ukays, the freed slave of 'Abdullah ibn 'Amir, narrated to us, from Abu 'Ubaidah ibn al-Jarrah (رضي الله عنه), who said: He mentioned that someone entered upon him and found him weeping. He said: 'What makes you weep, O Abu 'Ubaidah?' He said: 'We weep because the Messenger of Allah ﷺ mentioned one day what Allah would open for the Muslims and grant them as spoils, until he mentioned Syria. He said: If your life is extended, O Abu 'Ubaidah, three servants shall suffice you: a servant to serve you, a servant to travel with you, and a servant to serve your family and attend to them. And three riding animals shall suffice you: a mount for your baggage, a mount for your provisions, and a mount for your servant. Then look at me now: my house has become filled with slaves and my stable has become filled with animals and horses. How shall I meet the Messenger of Allah ﷺ after this, when the Messenger of Allah ﷺ advised us: The dearest of you to me and the nearest to me are those who meet me in the same condition in which I left them.'
