English Translation
Yazid narrated to us, Hammad ibn Salamah informed us, from 'Ali ibn Zayd, from Yusuf ibn Mihran, from Ibn 'Abbas (رضي الله عنهما), who said: When 'Uthman ibn Maz'un (رضي الله عنه) died, a woman said: "Congratulations on Paradise, O 'Uthman ibn Maz'un!" the Messenger of Allah ﷺ looked at her angrily and said: "How do you know?" She said: "O Messenger of Allah, your horseman and your companion!" the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "By Allah, I am the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and I do not know what will be done with me." So the people became worried about 'Uthman. Then when Zaynab, the daughter of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, died, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "Join our righteous and good predecessor, 'Uthman ibn Maz'un." The women wept, and 'Umar began striking them with his whip. the Messenger of Allah ﷺ took his hand and said: "Gently, O 'Umar." Then he said: "Weep, but beware of the braying of Shaytan." Then he said: "Whatever comes from the eye and the heart is from Allah عز وجل and from mercy, and whatever comes from the hand and the tongue is from Shaytan."
