English Translation
A son of Sa'd (رضي الله عنه) was praying and in his supplication he would say: 'O Allah, I ask You for Paradise and I ask You for its bliss and delight, and for such-and-such and such-and-such. And I seek refuge in You from the Fire, its chains, its shackles, and such-and-such and such-and-such.' Sa'd remained silent, but when he finished his prayer, Sa'd said to him: 'You sought refuge from a great evil and asked for a great bliss' — or he said: 'lengthy.' Shu'bah was uncertain. the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: 'There will be people who transgress in supplication.' And he recited: Call upon your Lord humbly and privately; indeed, He does not love the transgressors. Shu'bah said: I do not know whether the recitation of the verse was from Sa'd's words or the Prophet ﷺ's ﷺ words. Sa'd told him: 'Say: O Allah, I ask You for Paradise and whatever brings me closer to it of speech and deeds, and I seek refuge in You from the Fire and whatever brings me closer to it of speech and deeds.'
