English Translation
'Uthman ibn Muhammad narrated to us — 'Abdullah ibn Ahmad said: and I heard it from him — Jarir narrated to us, from al-A'mash, from Ja'far ibn Iyas, from Sa'id ibn Jubayr, from Ibn 'Abbas (رضي الله عنهما) who said: The people of Makkah asked the Prophet ﷺ to turn al-Safa into gold and to remove the mountains for them so they could cultivate. It was said to him: "If you wish, you may be patient with them. And if you wish, you may give them what they asked — but if they then disbelieve, they will be destroyed as those before them were destroyed." He said: "No, rather I will be patient with them." Then Allah (عز وجل) revealed this verse: {And nothing has prevented Us from sending signs except that the former peoples denied them. And We gave Thamud the she-camel as a visible sign} [al-Isra' 17:59].
