English Translation

Ya'qub narrated to us, the nephew of Ibn Shihab narrated to us, from his uncle, 'Urwah ibn al-Zubayr narrated to me that al-Miswar ibn Makhramah and 'Abd al-Rahman ibn 'Abd al-Qari narrated to him that they heard 'Umar ibn al-Khattab (رضي الله عنه) say: I heard Hisham ibn Hakim ibn Hizam reciting Surat al-Furqan in a way different from how the Messenger of Allah ﷺ had recited it to me. I almost confronted him during the prayer, but I waited until he finished. Then I grabbed his cloak and took him to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and said: "I heard this man reciting Surat al-Furqan differently from how you recited it to me." the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "Let him go." Then he said: "Recite, O Hisham." He recited as I had heard. the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "It was revealed thus." Then he said: "Recite, O 'Umar." I recited, and he said: "It was revealed thus. This Quran has been revealed in seven ahruf (modes), so recite whichever of them is easy for you."
