English Translation

Mu'awiyah ibn 'Amr narrated to us, Abu Ishaq narrated to us, from Sufyan, from Habib ibn Abi 'Amrah, from Sa'id ibn Jubayr, from Ibn 'Abbas (رضي الله عنهما) regarding the verse: 'Alif Lam Mim. The Romans have been defeated' [Ar-Rum 30:1-2] — he said: They were defeated and they were victorious. The polytheists wanted the Persians to be victorious over the Romans, and the Muslims wanted the Romans to be victorious over the Persians, because they were People of the Book. Abu Bakr (رضي الله عنه) mentioned this to the Prophet ﷺ, and the Prophet ﷺ said: 'They will certainly be victorious.' Abu Bakr mentioned this to the polytheists, and they said: 'Set a time limit between us.' So they set a limit of five years, and they were not victorious. Abu Bakr mentioned this to the Prophet ﷺ, and he said: 'Why did you not make it less than ten?' The narrator said: Within less than ten years, the Romans were victorious.
