حَدَّثَنَا حُسَيْنُ بْنُ مُحَمَّدٍ حَدَّثَنَا جَرِيرُ بْنُ حَازِمٍ عَنْ مُحَمَّدٍ يَعْنِي ابْنَ إِسْحَاقَ عَنْ حُسَيْنٍ عَنْ عِكْرِمَةَ عَنِ ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ قَالَ كَانَ بِالْمَدِينَةِ رَجُلَانِ يَحْفِرَانِ الْقُبُورَ أَبُو عُبَيْدَةَ بْنُ الْجَرَّاحِ يَحْفِرُ لِ
أَهْلِ مَكَّةَ وَأَبُو طَلْحَةَ يَحْفِرُ لِلْأَنْصَارِ وَيَلْحَدُ لَهُمْ قَالَ فَلَمَّا قُبِضَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ بَعَثَ الْعَبَّاسُ رَجُلَيْنِ إِلَيْهِمَا فَقَالَ اللَّهُمَّ خِرْ لِنَبِيِّكَ فَوَجَدُوا أَبَا طَلْحَةَ وَلَمْ يَجِدُوا أَبَا عُبَيْدَةَ فَحَفَرَ لَهُ وَلَحَدَ

English Translation
Husayn ibn Muhammad narrated to us, Jarir ibn Hazim narrated to us, from Muhammad — meaning Ibn Ishaq — from Husayn, from 'Ikrimah, from Ibn 'Abbas (رضي الله عنهما) who said: There were two men in Madinah who used to dig graves. One would dig deep (lahd) and the other would make a trench (shaqq). The companions said: 'Let us perform istikhara (seek guidance from Allah).' They sent for both, and the one who dug the lahd came first. So they dug a lahd for the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and buried him in a lahd grave.
