ابن عبد البر
Imam
Abu Umar Yusuf ibn Abdullah ibn Muhammad ibn Abd al-Barr an-Namari (368-463 AH / 978-1071 CE) was one of the greatest Maliki jurists and hadith scholars of al-Andalus. Born in Cordoba, he studied under numerous Andalusian scholars and became the foremost authority on hadith and Islamic jurisprudence in the western Muslim world. He served as the judge (qadi) of Lisbon and Santarém under the Berber dynasty.
Ibn Abd al-Barr's most important work is al-Istiab fi Ma'rifat al-Ashab (The Comprehensive in Knowledge of the Companions), a monumental biographical dictionary of the Companions of the Prophet ﷺ that became the standard reference in its genre and served as a base text for later works by Ibn al-Athir and Ibn Hajar al-Asqalani. He also authored at-Tamhid lima fil-Muwatta' minal-Ma'ani wal-Asanid (The Preparation), an extensive commentary on the hadiths of Imam Malik's Muwatta' arranged by chain of transmission, and al-Istidhkar, a shorter Muwatta' commentary organized by subject matter.
His al-Jami' Bayan al-Ilm wa Fadlihi (The Comprehensive Statement on Knowledge and Its Virtue) is a celebrated work on the ethics of seeking knowledge. His work Bahjat al-Majalis is a collection of literary and moral wisdom. Across all his works, Ibn Abd al-Barr demonstrates mastery of hadith, biography, jurisprudence, and the Arabic literary tradition.
He passed away in Denia, al-Andalus, in 463 AH, and is universally regarded as the greatest Maliki scholar and hadith master produced by Islamic Spain.
