Abdullah ibn al-Zubayr ibn al-Awwam al-Qurashi, may Allah be pleased with him, was the first child born to the Muhajirun in Medina after the Hijrah — an event greeted with great joy by the Prophet ﷺ and the early Muslim community, who had feared the Jews of Medina had bewitched them to prevent offspring. His father was al-Zubayr ibn al-Awwam, one of the ten promised Paradise, and his mother was Asma' bint Abi Bakr al-Siddiq, making him a grandson of Abu Bakr. The Prophet ﷺ performed the tahnik (chewing a date and rubbing it on the newborn's palate) for him personally. He grew up in the prophetic household, narrated hadiths from the Prophet ﷺ and from his father, aunt A'ishah, and other senior companions. He was known for his extraordinary bravery, asceticism, and devotion to worship. After the death of Yazid ibn Muawiyah, he was recognized as caliph and ruled the Muslim world from Mecca from 64–73 AH, resisting the Umayyad forces until he was killed at the Ka'bah. His narrations are found in Sahih al-Bukhari, Sahih Muslim, and the Sunan collections.
