Suwaid ibn al-Nu'man, may Allah be pleased with him, was a companion of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ from the Ansar of Medina and was present at the Pledge of Aqabah. He participated in the expedition to Khaybar in 7 AH, which resulted in the Muslim forces establishing control over that strategic region. He is known in the hadith literature primarily for his narration describing what the Prophet ﷺ and the companions ate during the journey to Khaybar — specifically that their provisions ran short and the Prophet distributed among them dried dates (sawiq) which they chewed as their main food. The Prophet ﷺ himself participated in this simple meal, demonstrating his practice of sharing in whatever provisions were available to the companions. This narration provides important evidence in Islamic jurisprudence regarding the rules of ritual purity (purity after eating cooked food) and is cited in chapters on wudu (ablution). His narrations appear in Sahih al-Bukhari and Sahih Muslim and hold significant legal weight on questions of ritual purity.
