Abu Bakra (RA)

Abu Bakra al-Thaqafi, may Allah be pleased with him, whose full name was Nufay' ibn al-Harith ibn Kilda al-Thaqafi, was a companion of the Prophet ﷺ who earned his kunya (Abu Bakra) by lowering himself by a rope (bakra) from the walls of Ta'if during the siege to join the Muslims. The Prophet ﷺ accepted him and declared him free. He settled in Basra after the Islamic conquests and became one of the most important and prolific transmitters of prophetic knowledge in that city, narrating over a hundred hadiths. He was known for his deep piety and his scrupulous care in transmitting the Prophet's words. Among his most famous narrations is the Prophet's ﷺ declaration on the Day of the Slaughter during the Farewell Pilgrimage: 'Do not revert to disbelief after me by striking one another's necks.' He also transmitted important narrations about the prohibition of injustice, the rights of family, and the prohibition on the killing of non-combatants. He abstained from participating in the civil conflicts between Ali and Muawiyah, having transmitted the hadith warning against fighting in such fitna. He died around 51–52 AH. His narrations appear in Sahih al-Bukhari and Sahih Muslim.
