Abu Hazim al-Ashja'i was a Tabi'i narrator who transmitted hadiths from several companions. The name Abu Hazim was borne by two notable Tabi'i scholars. The first, Salmaan — freed slave of Azda — narrated from companions in Kufa and the Hijaz and was generally regarded as reliable. The second and better-known scholar by this name was Abu Hazim Salama ibn Dinar al-Araj al-Madani, a Tabi'i of Medina who died around 135 AH. He was particularly notable for narrating extensively from Abu Huraira (RA) and Sahl ibn Sa'd (RA), and served as the teacher of Imam Malik ibn Anas. He was known for his deep asceticism, his philosophical sayings on life and death, and his frank speech with rulers. Both narrators sharing this name were trustworthy transmitters whose reports appear in the Sahihayn and Sunan collections.
