Abu Ayyub al-Ansari, may Allah be pleased with him, was a distinguished companion of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ from the Ansar of Medina. His full name was Khalid ibn Zayd ibn Kulayb al-Khazraji, and he was from the Banu Najjar clan. He had the great honor of hosting the Prophet ﷺ in his home upon the Prophet's arrival in Medina during the Hijra, an honor that came to him when the Prophet's camel chose to kneel at his door. He hosted the Prophet for approximately seven months, providing him with lodging and food until the Prophet's mosque and private quarters were completed. He participated in virtually all of the Prophet's military campaigns and was known for his bravery. After the Prophet's death, he continued to strive in the path of Allah into old age and died during the Muslim siege of Constantinople around 52 AH, becoming one of the most renowned companions to die on foreign soil. The Ottomans later built a magnificent mosque over his grave in Istanbul. He narrated hadiths on prayer, purification, and the rights of neighbors, and his narrations appear in the major hadith collections.
