Abu Tha'laba al-Khushani, may Allah be pleased with him, was a companion of the Prophet ﷺ from the Khushayn tribe of the Qudhaa' confederation who participated in the Treaty of Hudaybiyyah and gave the pledge under the tree — one of the highest honors attributed to any companion. He participated in military campaigns and settled in Syria after the Islamic conquests, where he became one of the important narrators of prophetic traditions in that region. He narrated hadiths on a variety of topics including the rules of hunting, the permissibility of eating game killed by trained hunting dogs and arrows, the obligation of zakah, and various matters of personal conduct and Islamic ethics. He also transmitted a significant narration about the characteristics of the people of each era — that there would come a time when forbearance and piety would be extremely difficult. His reports are found in Sahih al-Bukhari, Sahih Muslim, and the Sunan of Abu Dawud, al-Nasai, and al-Tirmidhi, and are cited in classical jurisprudence chapters on hunting and zakah. He passed away around 75 AH in Syria.
