Abu 'Ubayd al-Qasim ibn Sallam

Abu 'Ubayd al-Qasim ibn Sallam al-Baghdadi al-Harawi was one of the leading early scholars combining expertise in Arabic linguistics, hadith, Quranic sciences, and jurisprudence. He studied under Imam al-Shafi'i, Sufyan ibn 'Uyaynah, and other great scholars. His Gharib al-Hadith (Rare Expressions in Hadith) explains difficult vocabulary in hadith, while his Fada'il al-Quran covers the merits and virtues of the Quran. He also wrote Kitab al-Amwal (on Islamic economics and finance), an early and influential work. He died in Mecca in 224 AH.
