Abu Umamah al-Bahili (RA), whose full name was Sudayy ibn Ajlan ibn Wahb al-Bahili, was from the tribe of Bahila and embraced Islam during the Prophet's lifetime. He settled in Syria after the Prophet's death and became one of the most important companions in the Levant region. He was the last surviving companion in Syria and lived to around 86β88 AH β making him the final link in the entire companion generation in that important province. He narrated a significant number of hadiths β over 250 β and was particularly devoted to the recitation of Quran and the teaching of religion. He is known for hadiths encouraging the recitation of Surah al-Baqarah to protect the home from shaytan, and for numerous narrations on the virtues of various acts of worship. His narrations appear in Abu Dawud and other collections. This entry 'AbuUmamah' is an alternate transliteration.
