Abu Ubaid al-Qasim ibn Sallam al-Azdi al-Harawi was a distinguished Islamic scholar of the third century AH who made fundamental contributions to the sciences of Arabic language, Quranic studies, hadith, and Islamic jurisprudence. Born around 157 AH in Herat (in present-day Afghanistan), he studied under Sufyan ibn Uyayna, Yahya ibn Sa'id al-Qattan, and other leading scholars. He served as a judge in Tarsus for eighteen years under the Abbasid Caliph. Among his most important works is Gharib al-Hadith, a pioneering lexicon explaining the difficult and archaic vocabulary found in hadith, and Fada'il al-Quran on the virtues of Quranic recitation. He also wrote works on Islamic law, Quranic readings (qira'at), and Arabic linguistics. While he himself is not a Companion or Tabi'i, his contribution to the preservation and explanation of hadith knowledge was foundational, and his works remain standard references in the hadith and language sciences. He passed away in Mecca around 224 AH.
