Abdullah ibn Amr ibn al-As al-Sahmi (may Allah be pleased with him) was a Companion of the Prophet ﷺ from the Quraysh tribe who was unique in having the Prophet's express permission to write down hadith — making him one of the earliest systematic recorders of prophetic traditions. He maintained a written collection he called al-Sahifa al-Sadiqa (the True Scroll), which he preserved and transmitted to his students. He was also uniquely knowledgeable in earlier scriptures, having studied some of the Torah and Gospel, which gave him a broad religious perspective. He narrated approximately 700 hadiths. He was known for his extraordinary devotion to worship — he fasted continually and stood in prayer most of the night — until the Prophet ﷺ gently instructed him to moderate his practice and give his body and family their due rights. He participated in many battles. He passed away around 63–65 AH. This entry is a variant listing of the Companion also recorded as Abdullah ibn Amr.
