Al-Mughira ibn Shu'ba al-Thaqafi (RA) was from the tribe of Thaqif in Ta'if and embraced Islam before the Treaty of Hudaybiyyah in 6 AH. He was one of the most politically astute companions, serving as a diplomat, military commander, and governor under multiple caliphs. He served as governor of Basra under Umar (RA) and later as governor of Kufa under Muawiya ibn Abi Sufyan, a post he held until his death. He was renowned for his wit and intelligence, with many witty exchanges attributed to him in classical literature. He narrated approximately 136 hadiths on various topics including prayer, contracts, and prophetic conduct. He performed Hajj with the Prophet ﷺ, participated in many campaigns, and was involved in the conquest of Iraq and Persia. He passed away in Kufa around 50 AH.
