Hudhaifa ibn al-Yaman (RA) was a companion of the Prophet ﷺ who was uniquely entrusted with knowledge that no other companion possessed: the Prophet ﷺ disclosed to him the names of the hypocrites in Medina and confided in him knowledge about the major trials and tribulations (fitan) that would befall the Muslim community. Because of this, Hudhaifa became known as Sahib al-Sirr — Keeper of the Secret. Senior companions including Umar ibn al-Khattab would quietly observe whether Hudhaifa prayed the funeral prayer over a deceased person, using this as an indication of whether the deceased was truly a hypocrite. He narrated approximately 225 hadiths, and his narrations in chapters on fitan and the signs of the Last Day are among the most important in the entire hadith literature. He served as governor of Mada'in under Caliph Umar (RA). He passed away shortly after Uthman's assassination, around 35–36 AH, reportedly having prayed not to outlive the fitna of civil strife — a prayer that was answered.
