Hudhayfah ibn al-Yaman, may Allah be pleased with him — this entry represents yet another occurrence of the same great companion in the narrator data, reflecting different transliterations used in different hadith chains. He was the Prophet's ﷺ closest confidant in matters of the hypocrites and the trials of the end times. His unique position as keeper of the list of hypocrites made him an authoritative voice on matters of inner faith versus outward profession and on navigating the political crises (fitan) that the Prophet ﷺ foretold. His narrations about the fitna — the tribulations, civil wars, and the Dajjal — are among the most extensive and structurally important in eschatological hadith literature. He served as governor of al-Mada'in under Umar and Uthman and was respected throughout the Islamic world for his knowledge and his insight into people's character. He narrated reports on prayer, the description of the Prophet's night prayer, and proper conduct in times of religious confusion. He passed away around 36 AH, shortly after Uthman's assassination. His narrations appear in Sahih al-Bukhari, Sahih Muslim, and all major Sunan collections.
